the project

IMPACT BOOT CAMP is our core program to provide young people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to tackle the social injustices that often stand in the way of their success. IMPACT programs combine training in the creative arts (spoken word, musical theater, dance, poetry, and songwriting) and youth leadership development through the concept of Artivism. BOOT CAMP is taught by instructors who are Alumni of IMPACT and the BOOT CAMP process.

Impact's program consists of a 16 week "boot camp" for youths, ages 9-18, male and female, meeting after school and Saturday sessions from 11 AM to 5 PM. Impact’s "boot camp" introduces new participants to the purpose of IMPACT--to develop social skills, plan for post-secondary education, and maintain personal discipline. On Saturdays, Impact members are served a healthy meal and their school work is reviewed. Staff counsels youths about career planning and avoiding risky behaviors. Members workshop and rehearse new songs, all of IMPACT's songs, dances, skits, and poetry are created by students under the guidance of staff members. IMPACT performances are themed to promote respect for human rights and diversity.

IMPACT BOOT CAMP will take place April  2024 through August 2024, with approximately 30 to 50 IMPACT youth ages 8 to 18, mainly from Harlem. Most are young people of color. The young people with whom we work face myriad challenges to their healthy development, including; poverty, failing schools, violence in their homes and neighborhoods, high unemployment among youth of color, substance use, housing instability, and institutional racism, sexism, and heterosexism

why we're doing it

At IMPACT, the performing arts are a vehicle to promote resiliency, healthy decision-making, and academic success. IMPACT employs an asset-based model rather than focusing on a problem or issue that puts young people "at-risk." We provide adult and peer support in a safe, productive, and rewarding environment.  Youth are encouraged to be themselves, discover their talents and strengths, pursue their dreams, make friends, be a part of solutions to problems in their community, and prepare for successful adulthood. Young people explore the challenges facing urban youth by creating original theater, poetry, dance, and song. The process is healing and empowering.
