the project

Tennis Recycles was born out of a love for tennis and a love for life. After playing tennis in New York City for about two years, we saw a simple opportunity for positive change. Most tennis players use a new can of balls only a few times before they throw them away, and knowing this, we have made it our mission to divert tennis balls from going to the landfill. Recycling solutions are out there, and we are working to make them available and accessible all over NYC, and beyond.

the steps

1. Once receiving funding for plastic bins, they are ordered from

2. The first bin will go to Astoria Park tennis courts, where we have already initiated a pilot program with the parks department in Queens.

3. The second bin will go to McCarren Park tennis courts, where we have initiated a pilot program with the Brooklyn Parks Department.

3 Once bins are placed at the entrances of the courts, players can easily drop their used tennis balls in these bins and we will record the progress (number of balls recycled and frequency of filling the bins) throughout the summer tennis season, in order to obtain permission from the NYC Parks Department to expand the program to all public tennis courts in 2019.

4. As more funds are raised we will expand pilot programs to the remaining boroughs of Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island.

5. Future goals include expanding beyond NYC and increasing awareness by partnering with the US Open, The USTA & WTA, and hosting events and tennis tournaments to raise funds for additional recycling efforts.
