Call for Artists!

the project

Art Alley, the downtown public art initiative, is looking to build an environment where artists, from students to amateurs to professionals, feel welcome and encouraged to be engaged with the downtown improvement efforts.  Through 4 initial public art projects, we hope to build the capacity for artists to engage in murals, sculptures and out of the box, engaging, art projects.

the steps

Raising money is just the first step in the formation of a robust community-centered art program.  Here are some of the first few steps our committee will be taking in creating 3 exciting public art projects and one awesome event:

Projects:
Pretzel Sculpture
129 Broadway Mural
YWCA Hanover Mural
Arts Fest

1 - Pretzel Sculptures – as the prototypes show, we will be commissioning Hanover High School Students in the metal fabrication classes to create large metal sculptures of pretzels.

2 – These sculptures will be then decorated by local artists. Through a project submission process, we will have a select number of artists create unique pieces using the pretzel as their canvas.

3 - These pretzels will be unveiled at the first downtown Arts Fest!  This inaugural event will build upon Chalk It Up, a chalk art festival, and add live art and demonstrations in Center Square, combined with a stroll around the downtown to view the Pretzel Sculptures in their final display space.

4 – 2 mural projects will begin with a proposal and artist discussions.  These will then go for Borough of Hanover approval, which will be the beginning of discussions regarding a local ordinance change to allow a more robust art program in the Main Street Hanover District.

The steps don't end there!  These projects are only the start of many that could sprout from the collaboration and community.  We hope you'll support these first few projects and help get this initiative off the ground!

why we're doing it

We are engaging in these projects because they are going to be the catalyst for artists and economic development in downtown Hanover to collide.
