Build a raised garden bed where students can grow vegetables and learn to connect with and care for their environment.
The elementary school children will build a raised garden and a rain barrel with the help of parents and teachers. As they spend time growing vegetables, the children will begin to see the connection between their efforts, their food and the impact we have on our environment. The garden will provide hands-on activities to supplement their science lessons as well as provide healthy food for nutritious snacks. When the children reap what they have grown, it will encourage them to try healthy recipes and open a conversation about nutrition and local food. The rain barrel will ensure conservation of water.
Purchase supplies and build the garden frame. Prepare the soil and fill the bed. Assemble a rain barrel. Plant vegetables plants and care for them. Use the produce for nutritious snacks.
Teaching elementary students about the environment and local food, increases the future health of our town.
