Join us on Monday, June 6th for a skill share and garden walk-through with Cleveland-native and City of Atlanta Urban Agriculture Consultant Maurice Small. During the workshop, we will take guests on a tour of our gardens in Oberlin and share skills, resources, and methods we've learned over the course of our year-long journey interning with Maurice. Information shared may include but not be limited to succession planting, moon planting, soil regeneration, different types of plants and pests, mulching and composting. This workshop is open to gardeners of all experience levels, and also just for people who love food and/or nature! For us at Umoja Farmz, this workshop is a place to celebrate nature and all the things it has taught us during our internship, with the hopes that guests too will be inspired to start farming wherever they are, at whatever scale. In the words of Maurice: "It's simple, and it's possible."
We are raising the funds to cover Maurice's consulting fee so that the workshop will be free to any and all guests. Then we will host the workshop on June 6th!
In recent years, the pandemic, the worsening state of the Earth's climate, and the subsequent food-borne disease outbreaks and supply chain issues have made clear just how important it is for communities to invest in their local food systems. Humans are agricultural people and have been so since the beginning of our existence. It is time for communities to rebuild their relationship to their food, and that means getting into the soil and growing something. Yet, a lot of people don't know what is possible to grow and create on the small plots of land and space that are available to them. Or, they have tried to grow food but have struggled to protect it from pests or extreme weather, or they aren't knowledgeable of organic, permaculture practices that make growing food easier. We hope to show people what is possible with the gardens we've created with very little resources, and give people the opportunity to learn from Maurice Small, an organic gardening expert.
