the project
The idea is to host a one-day event that provides supplies and services to homeless/at-risk Veterans and family members, such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings and VA Social Security benefits counseling.
The physical space to be used is a vacant lot located on Centre Ave in Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which will be reimagining as a safe space to provide local military veterans and community residents in need with a better chance at life and a better world of service.
Specifically, we will also install "Empathy & Equity" Boxes that will be a special way to provide basic necessities to folks in need. The box will be similar to a "Little Free Library" but Instead of books, the box holds free hygiene products.
After discovering government assistance doesn't cover the purchase of things like shampoo, soap, and other hygiene products we decided to create a solution that would help those who struggled to access them.
the steps
Your financial support will go directly toward providing a veteran-friendly event repairing past harm.
In addition, Military Veterans will also receive referrals to other assistance such as health care, housing solutions, employment, substance use treatment, and mental health counseling. This event will support collaborative leadership and community stewardship of public assets coordinated between local VA Medical Centers, other government agencies, and community-based homeless service providers. As a healing and restorative-based event our focus objective is to repair past harm in the military veteran community through outreach, art, and storytelling. With your support, we can reduce veteran homelessness & suicide in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region.
