Community Field Experiences with Firsthand Learning

Our goal is to promote the process of scientific inquiry as a vehicle for learning and COVID has temporarily shifted in-person education to new formats.

1. Virtual Learning - We are bringing the breadth of our Outdoor Inquiries learning experience online as tools the community can use to learn, grow and stay connected. Our collaboration with the Buffalo Public School District and with Say Yes Buffalo will be to offer virtual learning sessions with students and their families across the City of Buffalo.
2. Nash House Museum [Post-COVID] - Develop a multifaceted approach to firsthand student engagement in a community field experience in collaboration with the Buffalo Public Schools and an historic cultural institution in the City of Buffalo. 

This project will:

* Assist people to become firsthand learners by using strategies such as recording natural phenomena on cell phone cameras to stimulate them to ask their own questions, and begin a learning path driven by their own curiosity.

* Develop virtual learning sessions with Say Yes Buffalo throughout May - June 2020

* Update online resources to provide teachers, families and students experience with Firsthand Learning’s breadth of inquiry-based tools 

* Strategize with community partners and coordinate firsthand learning experiences with cultural institutions in the City of Buffalo

The global pandemic has created urgency to develop leaders and the next generation of environmental stewards. We are working to create high-quality firsthand learning resources for our youth. This fundraiser will provide resources that are designed to assist parents, classroom teachers and informal educators to promote learning from direct experiences. Providing tools that will engage students in learning to ask and pursue questions that interest them is our primary goal.
