the project

The Vault is a teen center located at Eastside Community Network’s headquarters that provide youth with a safe and interactive space. Named “The Vault” because a vault is a place where precious items are stored. We consider the ideas and the overall well-being of our youth those precious items that we, as a community, cherish. We started by forming a Teen Advisory Council (of about 15 teen leaders) that meets bi-weekly and discuss issues faced by teens and ways that the center might address those needs. We recognized a void that needed to be filled within our own community.  Of the limited teen centers, only a few allow the teens to drive the decision making on the programs they want, while also providing an innovative space where they can hang out when they choose. When our Council initially met they explained that they wanted a space that was “chillable”, in their words, a space where they can get help with their homework and socialize with their friends. Did we mention that our Teen Advisory Council designed the Vault, down to the color of the paint on the walls? The programs being considered by the youth for the Vault currently are centered around their interests in gaming, sports, cooking, and technology.  In January we launched our first curriculum-based program hosted in the Vault called Chrysalis Gardens. Chrysalis Gardens is a sisterhood initiative for teen girls using gardening to take a holistic approach.

the steps

The need for the Vault was urgent, and so we launched with a little funding and a lot of hope. Our goal is to open the space Monday’s through Saturday’s, also taking field trips, launching interactive programs, and hosting welcoming events.

We need your helping raising funds to do all those things and also to provide more furniture and technology like computers, computer programming, tablets, and televisions or movie projectors. Because we are looking to start cooking classes, we need a stove and a refrigerator. We would like to have our youth in branded apparel, so when they go out and network they can make statements.

why we're doing it

Every day you hear someone say that our youth are our future, when in reality that is false, they are our now. We recognize the value and potential of each of our youth individually and we feel that it is imperative to invest in them now! The misconception is that we believe that they are only valuable later in life, but how can we expect them to be great if we are not investing in them now? We challenged ourselves and our own stereotypical thoughts and decided that we cannot have programs and centers for the youth without the youth’s input, so we created a Teen Advisory Council. We expect our youth to be leaders but we never give them the platform to lead, but our Teen Advisory Council (TAC) will do just that. Our Teen Advisory Council members are the “shot-callers”, and we work to address the demands of their wants and needs. By opening the Vault teen center we are giving our youth, inside of our community and those that choose to commute from other communities, a safe place to be free of the many problems that they incur every day at school and at home. The Vault will be overseen by relatable mentors, both male and female, who are willing to listen, assist, and support the youth in any capacity that is needed. We not only want to provide a safe space, but also a space where the youth can learn and have exposure to new things. How can you shoot for the stars if you have never seen them?  Our TAC is welcoming of all youth, and they are working on programs to bring other teens inside of their community together. Too many times we want to blame the crime in the community on the youth, but what alternatives are we giving them? The Vault teen center will address and combat a multitude of issues, by simply engaging, empowering, and believing in our youth.
